How to grip with sweaty hands (during a workout)

Have you ever been in the middle of an activity, only to discover you’ve turned into Sweaty Betty? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Sweat is a natural body process that unfortunately you can’t completely stop.

Don’t sweat it…

Whether you realise it or not, when you are trying something new – such as a new trick, heavier weights or a new golf track – your nerves and/or excitement play a key role in your sweat.

These emotions cause your body to release stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisol), which increase in your heartbeat, blood pressure, muscle tension, and trigger your sweat glands. However, the more confident you become with your chosen activity, the less hormones (sweat) are released. Hooray!

Is it hot in here?

While many of us enjoy the warmer weather, when it comes to exercising it doesn’t always help. Not only does this make your body temperature rise – queue sweating – but the humidity also causes equipment to seem slippery. So keep a towel close by and get hold of some grip to avoid any disaster.

On the other hand, cold weather causes your skin to dry out more than normal; and when your skin is too dry* you lose your sense of natural grip. Even when there is no sweat!

*Avoid letting your skin become too dry. Give your skin that TLC it deserves with moisturiser suitable for your skin type.

Know your body

Do you have dry skin? Oily skin? Perhaps you have a bit of both? Knowing this, will allow you to purchase body products (i.e. lotions and grip aids) that are best suited to help you build your natural grip.

However, occasionally there may be an underlying health problem. In Australia, as many as 3 in every 100 people are living with hyperhidrosis. This condition causes an excessive amount of sweat for no reason at all. If you feel this may be you, speak to your GP.

Get a grip!

While there are a multitude of factors that also influence your sweat factor – such as age, gender, genetics, weight and fitness level – that doesn’t mean you will never find your grip.

The easiest place to start reducing sweat is to wear clothing that is made of synthetic fabrics (such as polyester or lycra). However, this isn’t always possible for your hand grip.

Ensure you have thoroughly washed your hands with soap (fragrant-free, if possible). This will help to get rid of any body oils, sweat, or perspiration that may have developed during the day.

And, if you need a hand, we recommend sourcing an effective solution that is specifically designed to help keep that sweat away, and unleash your ultimate superpower grip.
